Go for Smartphones!

news date May.30.2009 categories About Smartphones comments Comments Off
Gadgets are really indispensable in this time and age. As such, people put much importance in the gadgets that they use. This is clearly seen in the choice of cellphones, particularly Smartphones. Smartphones have different kinds, various brands, and an assortment of styles and designs where one can select accordingly to their personal tastes. Moreover, Smartphones can aid in organizing daily transactions and business. Plus, it can serve as sources of entertainment, information and ready access to communication.

What’s more, Smartphones allow you to navigate the internet via a global positioning device or GPS. In brief, GPS is a worldwide satellite navigational system formed by 24 satellites orbiting the earth and their corresponding receivers on the earth. The GPS device was first operated by the U.S. Department of Defense but has now become a center of technology. It is now being utilized for cartography, exploration, wildlife management and supervising the movement of people and things. Customized for Smartphones, it enables one to surf the net or even create documents and graphics, store high-definition videos and pictures, and gazillion music for one’s own listening pleasure.

Besides its internet features, Smartphones are also affordable, especially if compared to the iPhone which definitely commands a high-price. In fact, if you want to be more economical, you can opt to purchase a used Smartphone. It will not be as shining and as sleek as the brand new models, but it works just the same and you can get it at a lesser cost.

Clearly, Smartphones have its advantages that can really help and entertain you.

Smart Grid Investing

news date May.30.2009 categories Best Smart Phone comments Comments Off
With the likely passage of the “Cap and Trade” bill, many investors are jumping on the renewable energy bandwagon. And why not. With the government about to mandate a cap-and-trade program that will drive up the cost of electricity, there are many new opportunities to capitalize on the flow of investment dollars from public and private sources. They also are looking for investment opportunities through stocks of smart grid companies.

This head long push into alternative power generation is causing investors to take a new look at the old electrical grid system. While there have been attempts to move to a market based power generation system, most of these efforts have failed to achieve their original goals. Moreover, the electricity transmission and distribution system remains much the same and is a big problem. For example, T. Boone Pickens has announced he is curtailing his plans to build the world’s largest wind farm in West Texas. Part of the reason is the lack of adequate transmission lines to carry electricity from the remote wind sites to cities. This is where a smart grid investment program makes sense for investors.

Investing in the Smart Grid

This old electrical grid system is designed to distribute power from consistent generation facilities that are close by. Building large wind farms in West Texas requires a way to move that power to urban areas that need it. Moreover, what happens if the wind stops blowing during the hottest days of the summer? Our current electrical grid system is ill suited to handle the variability of new sources of electrical power. Solving the transition to new power sources is only half the battle. After generating the power, you need to distribute it to where it is needed at the right time, in the right amounts and at a lower cost.

You can make an interesting comparison with the current electrical grid and communications network. If Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, were to come back today, he would not recognize the modern day communication system with digital based internet and wireless networks with their cell phones, Web 2.0, YouTube and Twitter. On the other hand, if Thomas Edison were to return, he would readily recognize our electrical transmission and distribution scheme, as he was one of the grid’s earliest architects. While it has grown significantly, the basic design remains the same.

The Smart Grid is the conceptual answer to the vast changes needed to adapt the current electrical system to one that is more efficient, adaptable, and capable of handling the variability of the sources of power while helping customers use electricity more efficiently. Like the evolution of the internet and the dotcom boom and bust, this is a huge opportunity with many unknown risks.

The Opportunity

According to Cisco, the smart grid offers major investment opportunities that are bigger than the internet for those prepared to take advantage of them. Jeff Immelt, CEO of GE believes the Smart Grid will be the biggest investment of the first half of the 21st century. President Obama is counting on investments by the government and companies in the smart grid to help the United States release it from its dependence on foreign oil.

According to a 2009 report by the American Society of Civil Engineers, $2 trillion will need to be invested in our electric infrastructure by 2030. The Brattle Group estimates that it will take $1.5 trillion to between 2010 and 2030 to pay for the upgrades necessary for the additional infrastructure for tomorrow’s electrical system.

These investments will take place throughout the electrical grid, in the home, in buildings, on campuses, neighborhoods in cities and across continents. Already we are seeing a few of these improvements. Some homes have smart meters that track electricity use in detail, providing the information to utilities. Eventually, homeowners will be able to access this data so they can make adjustments in their power consumption. The cost of these meters is quite high and is passed on to consumers. The hope is that once consumers have access to the information on their electricity usage, they will take steps to cut their consumption of electricity offsetting the cost.

The Risks of Investing in the Smart Grid

This raises the question whether there is a cost-benefit trade off from many of the investments to achieve the goal of a smart grid. Many people equate the smart grid to the growth of the internet. Much like the investment that came with the growth of the internet, there were some that provided valuable benefits. Others never paid off. I suspect we will see many smart grid investments experience the same fate. For example, as reported by the WSJ on APRIL 27, 2009, the home smart meters cost $250 to $500 per installed device. At this price, it is not clear if the meters will provide sufficient benefit to cover their costs.

The parallel to investing in the internet is an interesting analogy. The big winners were able to attach themselves to the “killer application” that drove business to them. However, there were many losers who failed to achieve their promise. Finally, those who provide many of the components and installed the infrastructure did well, even if they were not big winners.

OK, what is the killer application of the smart grid? The best definition I found for a killer app comes from www.netreturn.com  “A new good or service that establishes an entirely new category and by being first dominates it creating an enormous return on the initial investment”. Some people believe the smart grid killer app will be the electric plug in car. Not sure, that meets the definition very well.

Anyone remember the smart home? It has been trying to get off the ground for a number of years. This was another idea some put forward that has not received much success, as the payoff has been hard to generate.

Smart Grid Companies and Stocks

There is a number of start-up and established smart grid companies creating products for this market. Smart grid stock pure plays such as Comverge (COMV)), RuggedCom (RCM.TO) and EnerNOC (ENOC) all became public in the second quarter of 2007. Some very large companies like GE, Honeywell, Cisco, and Google have smart grid offerings. Keep in mind, the size of their smart grid services is relatively small when compared to their total sales.

Companies that provide and install many of the components of a smart grid should offer good returns; much like the companies who sold picks and shovels to the miners. Stocks of smart grid companies like ABB Ltd (ABB), Siemens A.G., and GE are likely to benefit as electric utilities build the new infrastructure for the smart grid. One way to approach this market is through an ETF that holds stocks in a smart grid fund. The Cleantech Index CTIUS, created by The Cleantech Group LLC is the basis for exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that hold smart grid stocks in the PowerShares Cleantech Portfolio ETF (AMEX: PZD) and the KSM Cleantech ETF in Israel. The index includes large companies like ABB and Siemens as well as smaller firms like Vestas Wind systems (VWS.CO), Itron (ITRI), Trimble Navigation (TRMB) and RuggedCom (RCM.TO). These ETFs hold stocks of companies that focus on clean technology, not just smart grid companies.

Investing in smart grid stocks will offer exceptional opportunities. It will also create substantial losses for those who do not tread carefully. While it is tempting to bet on what will be the killer app for the smart grid, a more conservative strategy is to focus on the companies that can show real cost benefit from their products or services and who generate positive cash flow.

Finding The Best Cell Phone Deals

news date May.30.2009 categories Uncategorized comments Comments Off
With cell phones becoming such a popular item, most people now own one. Perhaps you are chatting on your mobile phone right now? No matter where you go, whether it’s the grocery store or walking down the busy street, you can always see someone having a conversation on their phone.

People talk and talk, and no one really has anything important to say. This sudden increase in cellular phone usage makes it absolutely necessary for folks to search out the best cell phone deals.

While I rarely use my cellular phone, everyone else in my household loves theirs. They use them constantly! For this reason I am forced to do some research, and search out the best cell phone deals I can find. These deals are not always real “deals”. That’s why research is important if you want to really save money.

Every phone user wonders at one time or another “Who offers the very best deals around? Should I go with Verizon, or is Sprint cheaper?” One thing can be said for sure.

As users of cell phones, we want the most talk time for the least amount of money. To us those are the best cell phone deals. This is not to mention the fact that we must get good reception. What is the point of having a phone, if you have poor reception? None.

Fortunately for all users, there are various wireless services ready to compete for their business. This simply means they will be competing with array of cheap deals in order to get you to commit to their service.

You should consider each deal, as well as assess the benefits of each possibility. Do you need a lot of talk time? Are you looking for unlimited text messages? You should know what you want from your wireless service before you choose from the many services provided.

The first place you should search for great deals on cell phones is the internet. The world wide web is packed full of endless information regarding deals of all kinds. Be sure to search for reasonable plans from each company you are considering doing business with.

This way you will know all the best cellular deals that are available before you make any final choice. If you are like me, and rarely even use your cell, you may want to check into pay as you go cell phones. That way you only pay for the amount of time you choose.

Part II – What Do You Most Look for When Selecting a Business Cell Phone (e.g. Smart Phone, Pda)?

news date May.30.2009 categories Best Smart Phone comments Comments Off
I asked this question of a large business networking community recently….. “What features/factors do you consider most important when choosing a business cell phone….and why?”

Here’s more of their answers for your education and enjoyment:

* “It’s going to sound dull, but…business benefit and value for money.

Assuming you’ve got a corporate tarriff sorted, then I’d be looking for ….

* economy

* connectivity – e.g. quad band so we can standardise on a couple of

handsets globally

* functionality – e.g. sync to work PC for Outlook etc.

* decent vendor support.

Pretty low down on the list are things like eye candy and mp3 playback – no iPhone for us unfortunately!”

* “When it comes to a “business cell phone” a lot depends upon what you will use it for, where you will use it and how often you will use it.

If you just need email access and your HQ is in North America then RIM is still King….even when roaming abroad.  If you need more than simple email access then the world gets more complicated. Bottom line is to look at the TCO of any solution you choose and make a platform choice not a cell phone choice.”

* “My preference list:

- Good data connectivity. EDGE or HSDPA.

- Very good EMail client.

- Good PC-Sync capability.

- Able to view and edit MS-OFFICE, Acrobat files

- BLUETOOTH connectivity. supporting boardroom presentations from mobile.

- QWERTY keypad is must. will be helpful if a foldable keypad with mobile cradle attached is provided. notes can be directly created using original keypad.

- Wireless connectivity and seamless switching between GSM/UMTS and WLAN.”

* “The following features are a must for my business cell phone:

- Qwerty keyboard

- Office suite/editable

- Adobe support

- Sharp organiser

- Effective email support

- VPN connectivity

- 3G enabled

I think IPhone is defintely a good bet for this category though currently I am on a Motorola PDA.”

* “Simplicity. I hate it when mobiles have so many gimmicks that making telephone call almost becomes an option.  I don’t want a camera, don’t need to text, I don’t send emails, I don’t need a colour display.  I just want a simple phone, with large buttons and a simple menu.

* “First off I look for a phone that has a good battery, excellent radio and lots of storage.

Next I look for something that works with Office, since I need to be able to synchronise with Outlook and view documents. In the messaging suite it needs to be able to effectively do email. For example, I want it to have some form of keyboard device rather than just touch.

In the past I have also looked at the ability for the device to run a number of enterprise applications such as SAP, Oracle, etc.so that I can access CRM and Financial Data Systems.

At present I have a Sony Ericsson P1i as my main handset and have replaced a Blackberry with an HTC Touch Plus as my data device. However, I also have a Sony Vaio SZ61XP which runs with embedded HSDPA so my Laptop has become my smartphone.

What I would say is that despite the effort of .dot mobi to get better ….. the most effective way to squeeze the web onto a phone has been to run the Opera browser which I do on all three devices.”

* “ok.. I’m not sure how the iPhone can qualify as a business cell phone. Like most Mac products it hinders business more than helps it.

In a phone, it must MUST be able to work with and exchange in “always up to date” / real time email. It also must be able to support email encryption and be remotely managable. Such as Blackberry, or Windows Mobile 6 devices.

Someone steals my phone, and it’s already locked, so no use to them, as soon as I call the office, bam.. now it is also erased and deactivated. Instant paperweight.

My current Favorites ….. Moto Q Global, Blackjack with the WM6 update, or Black Jack II.

I am a bit of a cell phone addict, and have owned practically every type of phone that has existed, the rest are all lacking in some way.

Cingular/ATT 3125 (aka HTC Star Trek) was actually really cool. Full Windows smartphone features, but eventually I decided that I could no longer live without a full qwerty keyboard.”

*  “I would choose the Nokia E61 for businesses. The best feature about this phone is that you do not need a SIM Card to access internet or your IPLC in the office premises if your wireless is activated. It supports an email client and that enables you to access your personal and official mail. The phone has all the features of a desktop and supports most of the files types.”

* “First and foremost, as I travel internationally quite often, I need an unlocked gsm phone so that I can easily swap SIMs, and it should be quadband (world) compatible.

Wifi and VoIP (“real” VoIP — ie SIP, not Skype –both over GPRS and Wifi) is a must.

Easy syncing with Microsoft Outlook. Full QWERTY keyboard. IMAP email client, full web browser.

The obvious choice for my needs is the Nokia E61i… absolute best phone I have ever found for the international business user that has to stay completely connected from remote locales.

Also should add that bluetooth is a must and the ability to expand (with FlashSD or whatnot) the memory to at least 2GB. Should also have full media player capability (both video and audio) for watching movies or listening to some tunes on those long-haul flights. Also needs to support ACCD2 or

whatever it’s called for stereo bluetooth audio (I love my Motorola S9 headset!)…. again, the Nokia E61 or E61i (same as E61 but with camera) wins hands down..only cell(smart) phone I’ve found that meets all of my demands.”

* “Business means that you’ll probably have to deal with many people, many calls and many tasks.

Important things are:

1. how call history works. If somebody calls you several times it is good if the phone can store EVERY call instance, not only the last one with a given person. My TREO was storing histories of all incoming and outgoing calls for months and months (i was having at least 50 calls a day). So call history must be full and long.

2. big memory for contacts – for obvious reasons. And many fields for contacts – also helps put more information about people so that when you have 3 persons with name John Smith you’ll be able to find out which one you need.

3. Fully functional keyboard. When you know somebody is on the meeting and you can not speak to him it might help sending him/her a message – it will be seen even if person is in the meeting. If you have QWERTY keyboard then composing a message will take you 70-80% less time than doing it on a

traditional mobile.

4. Phone must be reliable. The last thing you want is your phone to fail killing all your contacts when you are for a business trip out of your country. You also do not want to lose tons of calls because phone has hanged up for a couple of hours and you did not know it.

5. GPS sometimes is helpful for people who travel much. But not for every business person.

The model of the phone does not really matter, but I think that NOKIA is a reliable brand, PALM Treo is also a good thing.”

* “A phone which you can answer , find the contact, and call them without spilling the coffee on your suit.”

More real life comments on the question will be shared in Part III of this series.

How To Find The Best Cell Phone Plan

news date May.29.2009 categories Uncategorized comments Comments Off
If you haven’t arranged a cell phone plan before, you may be forgiven for being confused with the vast array of schemes and cell phones on offer; stick to plans that provide just what you require within your preset budget. Owing to the large number of network services in this country, it may help you to research their offers before deciding on which scheme suits you best; rushing this can cost more in the long term if a customer is tied to a contract they doesn’t suit them.

The option of paying for their cell phone plan on a monthly basis may suit those individuals who use the phone more frequently. Knowing the two options should help you decide whether your phone use is such that you would be better served with a monthly option that allowed for a certain number of free minutes.

You can even get plans that cater for family use and those dedicated to where you live, or region. You will need to take into account that these plans have disadvantages as well.

One downside to prepaid cellular phones is that they often have watered down functionality compared to those that are paid for monthly. Plans created for small businesses and families would not be suitable for large companies that have very specific criteria.

Of course the biggest benefit a cellular phones that is part of a family plan is that calls made between those family members who are on the same contract usually get a discount. You may also find that other savings are available using this type of plan including special airtime discounts.

For national plans, this cell phone plan includes free long-distance charges. The other advantage to this plan is the lack of roaming charges which can mount up if you are someone who is a regular traveler.

Unfortunately, this benefit is not included in regional plans and you will probably be charged for national calls albeit at a reduced rate. Whilst prepaid cell phone plans are generally the best option for most people, this is not usually the case for people who travel a great deal as part of their business.

So – choose your cell phone plan wiseley and you can save really money.

One final note; your health is more important than the fact that people can reach you whenever they feel the need, so do yourself a favor and do not let people disturb you when you are having quality private time so switch your cell phone off occasionally.

Tips For Finding The Smart Phone That Is Best For You

news date May.29.2009 categories Best Smart Phone comments Comments Off
Smart phones are advanced types of mobile phones that are capable of performing many of the same functions as personal computers. For example, many smart phones are capable of taking photos or of supporting e-mail programs. Many can also function as a personal organizer, helping the consumer combine a number of electronic gadgets in to one simple, easy to use device.

Special Features Offered by Smart Phones

Not all smart phones are made the same. As such, they do not all offer the same features. Some features commonly found in smart phones, however, include touch screens, tethered modem capabilities, operating systems, full e-mail support, scheduling software, built-in cameras, Internet access, accelerometers, contact management, and navigation software. Some smart phones are even capable of reading documents in various formats, including Microsoft Office and PDF files.

Selecting the Smart Phone that is Right for You

One of the most important features to look for in a smart phone, which also helps to differentiate a smart phone from a regular phone, is the ability to install enhanced connectivity and data processing to the phone. These applications may include adding a touch screen, mini-keyboard, or security features. By having the ability to install new items to your smart phone, you can add on extra features as needed.

Even with the ability to add new devices to your smart phone, it is generally best to find one that already comes with the features you currently want in a phone. Therefore, you should make a list of the features you want and then narrow your choices down from here.

In addition to the features of the phone, you also need to consider the size and weight of the phone. While most smart phones are fairly lightweight, you may find certain phones to be too bulky or cumbersome. Make sure you are comfortable holding the phone and that you are capable of communicating properly.

You also need to consider the operating system used by the smart phone. The most common operating systems found in smart phones are:

Symbian OS

Linux

Windows Mobile

RIM Blackberry

Palm OS

While Symbian OS currently has the largest market in the world, with nearly 73% if smart phones using this system, it is not widely used in the United States. Windows Mobile and RIM Blackberry are more commonly used in the United States and, therefore, may be the better option for most United States consumers.

Smart phone add an extra level of convenience to consumer’s lives. In order to make sure you get the most out of your smart phone, however, it is important that you take the time to determine the features you want the most and to find the phone that best suits your needs.

What You Need To Know About Choosing A Cell Phone Provider

news date May.28.2009 categories About Smartphones comments Comments Off
Cell phones have become an integral part of the daily lives of most consumers, and that means that the choice of which cell phone provider to use is a very important one. After all, the cell phone itself can only be as good as the network it is connected to. So here are a few important tips that you ne ed to know about how to choose a cell phone service provider.

As far as performance and customer service are concerned, most consumer surveys that have been conducted in the last couple of years indicate that two cell phone companies seem to perform best overall, and that is Verizon and T-Mobile. Both Sprint and Cingular did not receive nearly as many positive comments from cell phone users.

However, this alone should not be the determining factor in which cell phone network that you choose to use, as both performance and service can vary dramatically from one location or area of the country to another. So a better way to get a good idea of the quality of service to you can expect from a cell phone provider in your particular area is to simply ask your family, friends and acquaintances about their experiences with their cell phone provider. No doubt, you will get quite an earful about their opinions, both positive and negative. These can be very useful if you include enough people in your informal survey, as usually clear patterns can begin to develop after you have queried enough local cell phone users.

Another consideration when selecting a cell phone provider is how you plan on using the phone on their system. There are two major digital networks that are in use in the US today, and they are CDMA and GSM. If your cell phone usage requires you to make phone calls from time to time in rural areas where there is no digital service, you’ll want to select a service provider that uses the CDMA network, because it allows for analog roaming in areas where a digital signal cannot be found.

On the other hand, if you travel internationally, you may want to consider getting a cell phone on a GSM network instead, as this kind of network is in wide usage internationally. What that means for you is that if you travel outside the US, you would be able to take your cell phone with you and use it as you normally would because of its compatibility with the overseas networks. Just check to see which kind of network is used by the cell phone providers in your area to decide on which will best fit your needs.

In order to protect yourself when choosing a cell phone service plan, it would be a good idea to only sign up for one year of service at a time. Although the cell phone companies will want to sell you service plans that cover a longer period of time and may be less expensive than the long run, it still may be best to try a cell phone provider in your area for only a year at a time to begin with, allowing you to determine the quality of their service and performance without being tied to a long-term commitment.

Hopefully, these tips and suggestions will help you find the best cell phone service plan for your needs and save you money too.
